FAQs

Sugaring/Waxing

An ancient Middle Eastern hair removal method that uses a natural paste of sugar, lemon, and water. Unlike waxing, the paste adheres to the hair rather than the skin, resulting in less redness, pain, and irritation. Gentle, effective, and water-soluble—it even washes off easily (and yes, it’s edible!).

  • Hair Length : Hair should be about the length of a grain of rice (¼ inch). If it’s too short, the paste or wax may not grip properly.
  • Clean, Dry Skin: arrive with freshly cleansed, lotion-free skin. Oils, creams, and deodorant can prevent the paste or wax from adhering.
  • Gentle Exfoliation: lightly exfoliate 24–48 hours before your appointment to remove dead skin and help prevent ingrown hairs. Avoid harsh scrubs the day of.
  • Skip the Sun & Heat: avoid tanning, saunas, or hot tubs 24 hours before and after your service to reduce irritation.
  • Clothing Choice: wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment to minimize friction and irritation after your service.
  • Pain Prep (Optional): if you’re sensitive, you may take an over-the-counter pain reliever about 30 minutes before. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, as they can make skin more sensitive. A numbing cream is available for purchase. The cream must be put on the area 45 to 60 minutes prior to your appointment. You can arrange a time with Skin Secrets for pick up prior to your scheduled appointment date. This will make your hair removal process easier.

Aftercare Mindset

Plan to keep the area clean and free from heavy sweating, hot showers, or tight clothing for the first 24 hours after your appointment

  • Both sugaring and waxing involve removing hair from the root, so some level of discomfort is normal—especially during your first few appointments. However, the sensation is usually quick and becomes much more tolerable with regular treatments

  • Remember to BREATHE! Holding your breath causes you to tense up.
  • Depending on what you are getting sugared, you will be gently guided to a position that assures the best sugaring treatment. Your esthetician may even ask you to hold the skin tight. The tighter the skin, the less it hurts.
  • Minor blood spotting is normal, especially if your hair has been shaved over a period, or if your hair is coarse and thick.
  • Many clients feel comfort in taking Ibuprofen before their sessions. Please consult a doctor before taking any medications.
  • A histamine reaction can occur on the first few visits. Taking an antihistamine a few days before your appointment and the day of your appointment may help prevent this. Again, please consult a doctor before taking any medications.
  • If your hair is extremely long, you may trim it down to an inch. BE CAREFUL not to trim it too short. If you trim too short, you still may be charged for the full session regardless if all the hairs can be extracted
  • Avoid applying heat to the sugared area for 12 to 24 hours. This includes hot baths, saunas, and steam.
  • Avoid sexual activity for 24 to 48 hours after your Brazilian service.
  • Use an anti-acne lotion for face, back, and chest following the treatment and twice a day until breakouts are gone. Use only products recommended by your skin care professionals. –Avoid applying highly fragranced products to the area. This includes perfumes, scented body lotions, antiperspirants, cosmetics, and feminine hygiene sprays.
  • Avoid using harsh abrasives or exfoliates in the sugared area immediately after sugaring. Wait 2 to 3 days before exfoliating, or when your skin is not irritated.
  • Avoid applying skin care products to the sugared area 12-24 hours after your appointment unless recommended by your skin care professional. This includes self-tanning products and tan accelerators.
  • Any pinking of the skin should disappear within 6 to 8 hours. Slight pinkening is normal and indicates the hair was removed from the root.
  • If you experience bumps or whiteheads after sugaring, it may possibly be a histamine reaction. This is a common reaction, especially for a first-time sugaring client. Your skin care professional can recommend products and home care to help decrease sensitivity.
  • Yes — you can absolutely get waxed while on your period. Many clients do! You’ll just need to wear a clean tampon, menstrual cup, or disc during your appointment. We also recommend letting your provider know so they can make you as comfortable as possible.
  • Things to Know: Increased sensitivity: Hormonal changes can make your skin more tender, so the waxing may feel slightly more uncomfortable than usual.
  • Hygiene is key: Fresh protection is required before your appointment, and good hygiene ensures a smooth, safe service.
  • Your choice: If you’d prefer to wait, we’re happy to reschedule if advance notice is provided — but if you’d like to keep your appointment, it’s completely fine and very common.
  • Yes — waxing and sugaring are generally considered safe during pregnancy. Many expecting clients choose these services throughout all trimesters. However, there are a few important things to keep in mind:
  •  Increased Sensitivity: Hormonal changes can make your skin more delicate, so you may experience more discomfort than usual during hair removal.
  • Safety & Comfort: Services can be performed as long as you are healthy and cleared by your doctor. Positioning may be adjusted, especially in later stages of pregnancy, to keep you comfortable. We use gentle techniques and natural products (especially with sugaring) to minimize irritation.
  • Before Your Appointment :Always consult with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns, high-risk conditions, or complications.
  • Why Many Moms-to-Be Choose It :Waxing or sugaring before delivery can help you feel more comfortable and confident, and many hospitals allow it.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a safe, effective treatment that uses concentrated light energy to target and destroy hair follicles, preventing future hair growth. The laser emits a gentle beam of light that’s absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair, converting to heat and disabling the follicle without harming the surrounding skin. This treatment can be used on almost any area of the body, including the face, underarms, bikini line, legs, and back. It offers long-term reduction in unwanted hair and leaves the skin smoother over time. Multiple sessions are recommended since hair grows in cycles, and the laser can only target follicles in their active growth phase. With consistent treatments, most clients experience up to 90% permanent hair reduction. Laser hair removal is safe for most skin types when performed by trained professionals using advanced equipment..

  • Proper preparation helps you achieve the best and safest results from your laser hair removal treatments.
  • 2–3 Days Before Your Appointment: Shave the treatment area 24–48 hours before your session. The laser targets the hair root, not the surface hair, so shaving allows the laser to reach the follicle effectively.
  • Avoid waxing, sugaring, or tweezing for at least 3–4 weeks prior, as these remove the root that the laser needs to target.                                  1–2 Weeks Before:
  • Avoid direct sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners. Sunburned or tanned skin increases the risk of irritation and pigmentation changes.
  • Stop using active skincare ingredients (like retinol, glycolic acid, or exfoliants) on the treatment area. Refrain from chemical peels or intense exfoliation treatments.
  • Day of Your Appointment: Arrive with clean, dry skin—no makeup, lotion, deodorant, or perfume on the area to be treated. Wear loose, comfortable clothing if treating larger areas. If you’re concerned about sensitivity, you may take an over-the-counter pain reliever about 30 minutes before your session.
  • Important Note: Inform your provider of any medications you are taking, especially antibiotics, Accutane, or photosensitive drugs, as these can increase skin sensitivity. Following these steps helps ensure your treatment is safe, comfortable, and delivers optimal results
  • Your laser technician will cleanse and prep the treatment area, then apply a cooling gel or use a chilled tip to help keep you comfortable. As the laser pulses, you’ll feel quick, warm snaps—often compared to the feeling of a rubber band lightly flicking the skin. Some areas are more sensitive than others, but the sensation is very brief and tolerable. Each pulse targets the hair follicle pigment, disabling future growth while leaving surrounding skin unharmed. Sessions typically last anywhere from 10 to 60 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.

  • Proper aftercare is essential to protect your skin and ensure the best long-term results from your laser hair removal treatments.
  • Your skin may feel slightly warm, pink, or sensitive for a few hours after your session—this is completely normal.
  • Immediately After Treatment: Apply a cool compress or soothing aloe vera gel to calm the skin if needed.
  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, and steam rooms for 24–48 hours. Refrain from exercise, sweating, or tight clothing that may cause friction on the treated area.
  • Do not pick, scratch, or exfoliate the skin—let it heal naturally.
  • Sun Protection: Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning for at least 2 weeks after treatment. Always use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher on the treated areas, even when indoors or on cloudy days.
  • Hair Shedding: You may notice treated hairs shedding over the next 7–21 days—this is a normal part of the process. Do not wax, tweeze, or sugar between sessions; only shave if necessary.
  • Skin Care Tips: Keep the area moisturized with a gentle, fragrance-free lotion. Avoid active skincare ingredients such as retinol, glycolic acid, or scrubs for about 5–7 days post-treatment. I
  • f you experience mild redness or irritation, aloe vera or a soothing barrier cream can help.
  • Consistency Is Key: Laser hair removal works best with a series of treatments, typically spaced 4–6 weeks apart, to target hair during its active growth phase.

Laser hair removal offers long-term hair reduction by targeting and disabling hair follicles during their active growth phase. Because hair grows in cycles, multiple treatments are needed to effectively target all follicles. Most clients need 6–8 sessions, spaced about 4–6 weeks apart, to achieve optimal results. Areas with thicker or darker hair may require additional sessions, while finer or lighter hair may need fewer. After completing your initial series, you can expect up to 90% permanent hair reduction. Some hair may regrow over time due to hormones or other factors, but it typically grows back finer and lighter. Maintenance sessions once or twice a year help preserve smooth, lasting results.

  • Laser hair removal is not recommended during pregnancy. While there’s no concrete evidence showing that laser treatments are unsafe for pregnant women, there also haven’t been enough studies to confirm that they’re completely risk-free. During pregnancy, hormonal changes can make the skin more sensitive and may cause temporary pigmentation shifts, which increases the chance of irritation or uneven results. Additionally, your body may experience new hair growth patterns that often stabilize after childbirth. For your safety and comfort, it’s best to wait until after pregnancy (and breastfeeding, if applicable) to begin or continue laser treatments. Your provider can help you create a personalized plan and schedule your sessions when it’s safe to resume.

Peels

A chemical peel is a professional skincare treatment that uses a customized solution of safe, exfoliating acids to remove dead skin cells and stimulate new cell growth. This process reveals smoother, brighter, and more even-toned skin. Chemical peels can help improve the appearance of: Fine lines and wrinkles Sun damage and uneven skin tone Acne and acne scars Rough texture and dullness There are different levels of peels (light, medium, and deep), and your esthetician will choose the right formula based on your skin type and goals. Most light peels have little to no downtime and leave your skin feeling refreshed and renewed.

A Korean Spicule Peel is an advanced, non-acid facial treatment that uses marine spicules—microscopic needle-like structures naturally derived from sea sponges—to gently stimulate the skin’s renewal process. Instead of using chemical acids, this peel works through micro-exfoliation and cell regeneration, encouraging the skin to naturally shed dead cells and produce fresh, healthy ones. This treatment helps improve: Uneven texture and dullness, fine lines and wrinkles, acne and congestion, and pigmentation and scarring. Korean spicule peels are often referred to as “needle-less microneedling” because they deliver similar skin-rejuvenating results without the use of actual needles. It revitalizes the skin from within, leaving it brighter, firmer, and more radiant over the following days as the skin naturally renews itself

Proper skin preparation helps ensure the best possible results from your chemical peel and reduces the risk of irritation or uneven pigmentation.

3 Weeks Before Your Peel:

Use Vitamin A (retinol) and Vitamin C products daily to help strengthen and prime the skin. These ingredients support healthy cell turnover and antioxidant protection, allowing the peel to penetrate more evenly and effectively. For clients with higher Fitzpatrick skin types (IV–VI), it’s highly recommended to use a tyrosinase inhibitor (such as hydroquinone, kojic acid, or arbutin) for at least 3 weeks before treatment. This helps prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and promotes a more uniform result.

Additional Guidelines: Avoid tanning, self-tanner, or prolonged sun exposure for at least 2 weeks before your peel. Discontinue use of exfoliating scrubs, acids, or retinol 3–5 days prior to your appointment. Let your provider know about any active breakouts, open wounds, or recent skincare treatments. Following this prep routine ensures your skin is healthy, resilient, and ready to receive the full benefits of your peel.

uring your Chemical Peel treatment, you may feel a mild tingling or warm sensation as the peel works to dissolve dull surface layers and stimulate new skin growth. Afterward, your skin might feel slightly tight or sensitive for a day or two, followed by light flaking as the fresh, healthy skin reveals itself. Chemical peels are great for improving texture, tone, and brightness, helping reduce fine lines, acne, and pigmentation.

Korean Peel: As the spicules are massaged into your skin, it can feel similar to fine fiberglass—prickly and slightly rough. This unique sensation tells you the peel is activating cell turnover deep in the skin. You’ll continue to feel that “fiberglass” tingle or prickly feeling for a few days after your appointment as the spicules work beneath the surface, encouraging collagen production and renewal. Expect your skin to look refreshed, smoother, and more radiant after your natural cell cycle completes.

  •  Proper aftercare is essential to protect your skin and maximize your results following a chemical peel. Your skin will be more sensitive than usual, so gentle care is key. Immediately After Your Peel: Expect mild redness, tightness, or flaking — this is normal and part of the renewal process. Do not pick, peel, or rub any flaking skin. Let it shed naturally to avoid irritation or scarring. Avoid heat, exercise, saunas, and direct sunlight for at least 48–72 hours. Hydration & Protection: Keep your skin well-hydrated with a gentle, non-comedogenic moisturizer. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily, even indoors, to protect your fresh skin from UV damage. Avoid active ingredients such as retinol, AHAs, BHAs, Vitamin C, or exfoliants for 5–7 days or until your skin has fully healed. For Best Results: Continue your customized home care routine as directed by your esthetician once your skin has recovered. Stay consistent with Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and daily sunscreen use to maintain your results and support long-term skin health. Your skin will continue to improve in the days and weeks following your peel — revealing a smoother, brighter, and more even complexion.
